A couple weeks ago I told you guys how I was going to be trying to eat better, right? One of the ways I’m trying to do that is by eating a lot less processed foods and more things with ingredients I can actually pronounce. I don’t know if you ate hamburger helper when you were growing up, but it was a STAPLE in our household, so as an adult it’s definitely the epitome of comfort food for me! I was really surprised to find how easy this was to make from scratch. And it tasted so good too! It really made me wonder why I ever bought the boxed stuff at all! It only cost me the cost of the ground turkey and the noodles because I had everything else on hand, so the cost was comparable too.
This recipe is actually adapted from this one found at Farm Girl Gourmet. I made mine a little healthier though by substituting lean ground turkey for ground beef. I also added onions because sauteed onions are the most delicious thing ever.
- 1 lb lean ground turkey
- half of an onion, minced
- 2 1/2 cups milk (I used 2 percent, but you could use skim or whatever)
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- olive oil
- 1/2 tablespoon cumin
- 2 cups elbow macaroni
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
- 3/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- How to make it:
yummmmmm
This sounds dang delicious. Hamburger Helper is definitely a weird guilty pleasure that JB and I share. Now I don’t feel quite so guilty about it 😉 Thanks for sharing!
Looks amazing! And I look forward to checking out more Farm Girl Recipes!
I’m gonna make this! I assume Jneezyisripped has approved it (as he would certainly not approve the 2 oreos I’ve been having for dinner lately.)
oh. yummmmmmmmy. thanks for sharing, katie!
Yum!! I actually just had velveetas cheeseburger Mac helper last night, haha!
Ooo.. I like it! I’ve taken the challenge on this year of eating cleaner. This is a great recipe!
Yesss!! I did a homemade version on accident, hahaha! After I was done with my concoction I was like heyy it’s like hamburger helper! I don’t eat beef so it was ground turkey also! I find that using “real” ingredients makes me feel a bit better about it!
