Acts of Kindness

Personal

December 3, 2013

I thought about titling this post “The 12 Deeds of Christmas” but that sounded so cheesy to me. In a nutshell though, that’s essentially what I’m setting out to do…12 random (or not so random) acts of kindness done in the holiday spirit. I think that it can be a lot easier to get involved with your community and do things to give back if you’re actively involved in a church, but since I’m not, I decided why not create my own opportunities to help others? A couple weeks ago I wrote out a list of ten things that I have already planned to do this Holiday season and left two spots open ended for spontaneous giving. I would love to encourage my clients and friends to also participate! You can join in on some of the things I’m doing, or you can come up with your own ideas based on things you’re passionate about. I’d love to hear about how you guys plan to give back this season (and year round) so feel free to share in the comments!

1. Write holiday cards to soliders overseas
2. Donate coats we aren’t using
3. Leave encouraging notes in public places for other people to find
4. Buy kitty treats and food to take to the SPCA
5. Donate children’s books. (Barnes and Noble has a program going that makes this easy!)
6. Make holiday cards for kids in hospitals
7.  Spend a day volunteering (I’m still researching this one)
8. Donate money to a local charity (If you want to follow along, pick any charity that means something to you! I think I’m going to pick something that benefits animals)
9. Buy lunch for a homeless person
10. Pay for someone elses’s lunch or coffee

Katie — I love this, I would offer you a place to volunteer but it is up here in DC! Diaper Bank DC has what the call WHINE (Wine) Wednesdays! You Byob and pack diapers with your friends! It is fantastic organization, so if you are up here and want to volunteer let me know! hugs for the holidays!

I think it’s kind of neat to pay for the person behind you when you go to the drive-thru.
Also I know a bunch of local (to Northern Virginia) animal charities that for sure put their money to good use. I work with Animal Allies, but King Street Cats, Alley Cat Allies, and Petfinder are all great organizations that can use donations- if you need some ideas. They can always use volunteers too!
What a great list of things to do 🙂

These are all good ideas and I might have to join you on some! I also think donating blood is a very good pay it forward, it’s the gift of life!
