For Photographers – Branding tips!!

Business

April 25, 2012

So where we last left off I explained how important branding is, especially for new photographers. Now I want to share a few of my tips! Like I said before, I’m definitely no expert on branding, and all of what I say is really just my own opinion. Hopefully someone can learn something that helps them!

Figuring out your ideal client
A big part of the branding process (other than figuring out who you are and how that plays out visually) is deciding exactly what you want to do and who you want to work with. I’m a really big believer in finding something you like and specializing in it. Are you most at home doing family portraits? Or maybe you’re all about boudoir or newborn photos? For me, I know that I love wedding photography. I get so excited/nervous before a wedding it’s like my friend is getting ready to walk down the aisle. On the other hand, I started dreading taking pictures of children. It’s not that I don’t LOVE children, I’m just not as passionate about children’s photography. Figuring out my market was a great step in the right direction for branding. After I decided I wanted to be a “wedding photographer” I knew I had to market myself as such. I know it’s tough when you are new and you really want to take any clients who will have you, but if you want to specialize, you will have to turn things down. And when you turn things down, sometimes it sucks! But if you are going to be a wedding photographer, you have to show lots of weddings on your blog. You have to show what you want to shoot!

Once you know what “genre” of photography you want to shoot, you can start narrowing down the types of clients you are looking for. Are you interested in high end, estate weddings? Or maybe you like DIY, handmade weddings? I really enjoy working with people who are creative, young, and don’t take life too seriously. So my brand is very fun and irreverent, just like me and the clients I hope to attract.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m no expert on marketing, branding, or photography, though if my tips were to help even one person, I would be really happy with that! If you’re unhappy with the content of this post…please see my manager. Oh wait…HA. Stay tuned for my next tip!!
