Library card

I got a library card yesterday and it took me back to when I was little and my mom would take us there at least once a week. We’d leave with literally STACKS of books that we’d devour in less than a week! Reading was such a huge part of my life when I was growing up and I can’t wait to have kids one day and read to them every day like my mom read to us.  As soon as I cracked open a library book yesterday and heard the crinkle of it’s plastic cover and smelled the unmistakable musty library book scent I felt so wistful. I miss the time when life was simpler and time seemed to stretch on endlessly. When a library trip was the highlight of my week and I could lose myself in books. These days it feels like there’s a shortage of time and with every year that passes, the days go by a little bit faster. I rarely have time for books anymore and more often than not I feel like I’m at odds with my to do list. Going to the library reminds me to slow down and appreciate that we live in a world where reading is encouraged and celebrated. The fact that there are libraries (essentially places that have free books that anyone can borrow) in this fast paced and crazy materialistic world is so amazing to me!

I love this technology driven world that we live in. I love Spotify, iPhones and Google Hangout…and as far as I’m concerned, the DVR is one of the BEST inventions that’s come around in the past ten years or so. But sometimes it’s nice to be thankful for the simple and free things life has to offer…like library cards:)

One thing you guys might not know about me: I used to want to be a librarian and/or book editor when I grew up! Can you imagine a life better than reading books every day for a living? Well I guess I kind of can…I eat wedding cake and take pictures for a living 😉

Is it weird that reading to my future kids is something that I also look forward too? I love reading. I truly need to make more time for it!

  2. Yay for free books! I used to LOVE going to the library when I was little. I was such a book worm!

  3. I was just about to say, I am a freak and LOVE those plastic covers and library book smell. LOVE! I used to get to take a trip once a week with my aunt every summer when she watched me and it was the best.day.ever. Our library had a big park next door and we would get to go pick out our books, visit the library gerbil (yes, our library had a pet gerbil), then go sit under the big statue in the park and read. I literally would give anything to have those moments of total carefree-ness back, just for one hour 🙂

  4. we had a ‘bookmobile’ that came around every week during the summer months and we would go with my grandmama – it amazes me how much we read in a single week back then and now i can barely make time to read a book a MONTH. sad, but true!

We went to the library every single day when I was little and homeschooled. I’ve lived in Chicago for four years and have yet to go to the library….I seriously need to go get my card ASAP!

  7. love it!! i have actually been thinking about getting a library card again!

  8. YESSSS. We’re taking advantage of all things free lately – city pools, library cards, you name it – we love it! Plus – there’s just something about holding a REAL book in your hand, the smell of it, turning the pages… love.

I’ve been itching to go check out the local library in our neighborhood! I’ve always adored reading… I actually participated in a bunch of programs run by the library just so I could hang out there!

I could not wait to read to my kids as well! Now that I actually have one, we read to him every night and he is only 4 months old. I remember the days of going to the library and participating in the summer reading program. I absolutely loved it! And my mom, brother, and I cuddled up on the couch reading Frog and Toad. Like you said, I rarely find time to read and it’s so sad! This post really brought back some good memories and gets me excited to create new ones with my little guy 🙂
