Summer reading list

So I kind of bought a kindle on impulse the other night…yup, a kindle. You might be wondering how someone buys an 80$ electronic on impulse. Especially someone who is about to be leaving a steady job for an industry that is up and down and should be saving all of her pennies. Well, as the queen of impulse purchases I would like to discourage you from visiting eBay on your iPhone late at night after you get tired digging through stacks of books on your nightstand. No, that’s not a hypothetical situation. It  really happened.  As soon as I clicked “confirm bid” I all but forgot about it until I got that “Congratulations!!” email the next morning. What the what? Why don’t I get outbid on these things when I KNOW it was purely an impulse bid?? Someone has to save me from myself.

As the soon to be owner of an Amazon Kindle, I’d like to know what you guys are reading! Any recommendations? I love funny books, but I’m also a sucker for a young adult novel like Harry Potter or the Hunger Games. So far I’m thinking most likely my first buys will be “Worth Every Penny” and “50 Shades of Gray”. JK. I definitely will NOT be reading that last one. Ha!

If you’re into historical type books with a twist – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Oh and Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter. 😀

redeeming love is amazing! i also love jodi picoult books like – the pact and nineteen minutes.

do you like non-fiction? how about something like “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls. (my fave book!)

I read ‘delirium’ in my frantic search for something like The Hunger Games! It was really good. Also reading the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich, they are really funny, like laugh. out. loud. funny. Really. Tommy got me a kindle a few weeks ago for our anniversary it’s pretty much my new favorite thing! Happy reading!

Big plans and a feature!!

Hey! I just wanted to say thank you for all of the support I’ve received over the past couple days. All of your congratulations, kind words, and encouragement mean so much to me! I never expected so many people to reach out, and I definitely didn’t expect to get as many emails and text messages from people who were excited about my news. I am so grateful to be able to begin this new adventure with so many incredibly supportive people in my corner. THANK YOU!

So I thought it would be fun to share my goals for myself and my business as I make the leap into full time photography. Okay maybe not really fun…at least not in the way that cotton candy and cut off jorts are fun. But I definitely think it is necessary for me to put my goals out there to keep myself accountable. Lucy (my cat/newest coworker) is not going to keep me on top of it. In fact, I bet you anything her first order of business will be to try to convince me that we should be taking naps all day and not doing any work. Hmm..that idea actually doesn’t sound half bad!

In all seriousness, I do have big plans to make the most of my new employment status…there will be much more time for the things I like to do like vlogging and creating styled shoots as well as time for not so fun things like filing taxes and organizing. Ugh. So here’s a list of some of the things I plan to do when I start work full time for ME!

  • Learn SEO and use it
  • Video blog once a week
  • Develop an editing workflow that is seamless and makes sense
  • Blog more tips and helpful posts
  • Organize my office. KEEP IT ORGANIZED!!!
  • Stay on top of my inbox.
  • Create a new pricing guide
  • Design sample albums
  • Develop more ideas for client gifts/suprises
  • Blog more images of each session!
  • Figure out a good client filing system
  • Create a bridal guide for new clients
  • Create my own invoices/receipts
  • Update my contract
  • Bring DIY back to the blog

Personal goals:

  • Create a meal plan and cook dinner at least four nights a week
  • Go to bed at the same time every night
  • Make it to the gym at least four days a week (HA!)
  • Read a book a month (at least)
  • Shoot for ME

In addition to the things I listed here, I also want to break my shutter. Okay not literally (knock on wood, knock on wood!!) but I want to shoot my heart out. Working full time has meant that when I get off in the evenings, all I have time for are editing, packaging, and other random clerical things. So the opportunities I had for shooting were pretty much limited to when I actually had a session to shoot for a paying client. I am hoping that being full time will mean that there will be more time to dedicate to side projects that I can do for just the love of them. And that I will be able to find some time to shoot because I love photography and want to learn to think of myself as an artist. Photography is one of those things you will ALWAYS be learning and growing at, and I’m excited to have the freedom to push myself and learn new things.

Also, there will be a few other changes. If you are interested in knowing, since I will have more free time I am planning on taking on a few portrait clients a month. Meaning I will now be offering lifestyle portraiture again for couples who are not engaged, families, newborns, etc on a limited basis. These sessions will be shot on weekdays only. For a while I did not have time to commit to portraiture clients, but now I will! At first it will be on a very limited basis…meaning maybe one or two sessions a month, but depending on how things go I may be able to commit to more. We will see!

Lastly, Brad and Stephanie’s wedding has been featured on Hi-Fi Weddings! Hi-Fi Weddings is the PERFECT blog to feature their wedding because Brad and Stephanie are both seriously into music. Their playlist for the day was very lovingly put together by the two of them. Head on over to see the full list of songs they chose as well as leave them some love!!

Sounds like you have a plan, good direction and the drive. Get it girl! xo

My big news

For the past week or so, I’ve been somewhat annoyingly hinting all over Twitter and Facebook about some really REALLY big news I couldn’t wait to share.

Yup, as of June 22nd, I will be solely employed by Katie Nesbitt Photography. ALSO KNOWN AS ME.

When I first started doing photography and my business started growing, I knew in my heart that I wanted more. Once I started my business and realized how much I loved it, I was no longer satisfied by working full time at my corporate job and being a photographer on the side.  I wanted to be able to support myself by waking up every day and doing something I loved. To live my dream.  I am incredibly excited and EXTREMELY fortunate that I am able to venture out and jump into this next stage of my life.  How many 24 year olds can say that not only have they found the thing in life that they love, but they get to do it every day and make a living at it?

I’m not going to lie…I never thought I would be able to make this leap so soon. Last year at this time I was saying to myself “Maybe in a few years I can go full time”. At that time it was more of a secret goal I had for myself than anything else.  But thanks to the incredible people who I get to call my clients as well as the BEST HUSBAND who believes in me more than I believe in myself, I’m going to be able to chase my dream.

I know it will be hard. I’m scared out of my mind and I almost cried/threw up when I turned in my notice at my corporate job. And we will have to make sacrifices like skipping vacations and not going out to eat. We may have to cut out fun extras and I’ve already cancelled my birchbox subscription because it just seemed frivilous. I might have to get a part time job delivering pizzas to earn extra spending money. Part of me feels guilt for leaving a steady job to work in an industry that can be very up and down. It’s weird to say/write this here, but I think because I genuinely enjoy running my business, I almost felt like I didn’t deserve to get to wake up and do something that made me that happy every day. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. The reality is although I’m quitting my job to pursue my dream, I’m leaving it to WORK HARD to continue to grow and build my business into something awesome. Though it will definitely be tough and there will most likely be tears and freak outs along the way, I know deep in my heart this is what I’m supposed to be doing and if I don’t go for it, I will wake up one day wondering what might have been.

Pssst! Here’s a peek at what’s coming to the blog tomorrow!

Awesome!!! 🙂 Way to go!! 🙂

Stephanie and Brad | Jasmine Plantation Wedding

I don’t think I have EVER blogged this many images from a wedding, but I just couldn’t help myself. I just kept adding more and more to my list and then just couldn’t bear to take any out! Stephanie and Brad were married last weekend at the beautiful Jasmine Plantation in Providence Forge, Virginia. It was the perfect venue for one of the most ADORABLE weddings I’ve ever shot. Stephanie and Brad put a lot of thought into their details right down to an amazing playlist they created out of some of their favorite indie songs. I am so glad I was able to be a part of this wonderful day! Brad and Stephanie, thank you so much for making me feel so welcome and being so adorable!

Also, a REAAALLLLY big thank you to Karen Allen, who second shot. She is the business. That is all.

This is why I love a first look!

Stephanie’s brother got ordained so he could give their ceremony. And both Brad and Stephanie wrote their own vows. I teared up a little bit when Stephanie read hers!

Shortly after the ceremony, Brad and Stephanie made a quick getaway in a classic Corvette that Brad’s dad painstakingly restored and got running just in time for the wedding. SUCH a beautiful car!
