The Power of Now

Personal

October 18, 2012

I’ve been going through a rough past couple of weeks in my personal life and for some reason or another I ended up turning to a book my mom tried to get me to read when I was in high school, called The Power of Now. It’s almost a little too mystical in tone for me, but the book’s message is something that really speaks to where I’m at right now. One paragraph in particular really stuck out, when the author mentioned that we live in the future because we want to see ourselves happy there, and we dwell on the past for all sorts of reasons, but the only thing that is really true and real, is this very second.

He wrote: “[The ego] constantly projects itself into the future to ensure its continued survival and to seek some kind of release or fulfillment there. It says:  ‘One day, when this, that, or the other happens, I am going to be okay, happy, at peace.”

CAN I GET AN AMEN?

I don’t know about you, but I think A LOT about the future. Even if it just as simple as watching the clock all day waiting for John to get home, or being excited we have dinner plans out somewhere I like to eat on Thursday. And as I’m doing that, I’m wishing my life away! Instead of waking up one day wondering where life went, I hope to make a conscious effort to be present EVERY day. To think less about the future and the past. One is uncertain and the other can’t be changed. The only thing that is really REAL is this moment.

To close out this post, here’s an image from the past, of a couple that will be featured on the blog in the future (tomorrow)!

A math teacher of mine (circa 2001) used to say: today is (for example) October 18th 2012, and it’s the ONLY one you’re ever going to get! So in the sense of your quote and living in the future, the teacher saying that to us kind of slowed us down to just take in today for it is and let tomorrow come when it arrives. I totally get you, and it’s hard not to look to the future!! Specially when there’s a yummy dinner in store!!! Enjoy today! 🙂
