A couple weeks ago I told you guys how I was going to be trying to eat better, right? One of the ways I’m trying to do that is by eating a lot less processed foods and more things with ingredients I can actually pronounce. I don’t know if you ate hamburger helper when you were growing up, but it was a STAPLE in our household, so as an adult it’s definitely the epitome of comfort food for me! I was really surprised to find how easy this was to make from scratch. And it tasted so good too! It really made me wonder why I ever bought the boxed stuff at all! It only cost me the cost of the ground turkey and the noodles because I had everything else on hand, so the cost was comparable too.

This recipe is actually adapted from this one found at Farm Girl Gourmet. I made mine a little healthier though by substituting lean ground turkey for ground beef. I also added onions because sauteed onions are the most delicious thing ever.

Homemade hamburger helper recipe

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey
  • half of an onion, minced
  • 2 1/2 cups milk (I used 2 percent, but you could use skim or whatever)
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • olive oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon cumin
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • How to make it:
Warm a little olive oil in a medium/large pan and add the ground turkey and minced onions. Cook until all of the pink is gone and the onions are nice and soft. If there’s any fat leftover (if you bought the extra lean ground turkey there won’t be any), get rid of it. Combine the water, milk, and spices and add to the pan. Add noodles and then bring the whole mixture to a boil. Once it’s boiling, turn the heat down and let it simmer, covered for 10-12 minutes or until the pasta is cooked through. Add cheese last, mix it all up, and you’re ready to eat!

Yesss!! I did a homemade version on accident, hahaha! After I was done with my concoction I was like heyy it’s like hamburger helper! I don’t eat beef so it was ground turkey also! I find that using “real” ingredients makes me feel a bit better about it!
