California Dreaming

Personal

April 29, 2014

In just a few short weeks, John and I will be celebrating our third (yes THIRD!!! Time is flying by!) wedding anniversary and it’s gotten me thinking a lot about the honeymoon we STILL haven’t gone on. I actually realized not too long ago that we haven’t really been on a true vacation just the two of us in the seven years we’ve been together! We went to the beach for a week with my family, and to Vegas for a week with our friends, and there have been little weekend trips in between, but never a big vacation with just us.  That’s crazy, right?

Right now I’m researching honeymoon locations for us…a California road trip is pretty high up on my bucket list.  I mean, LOOK AT THAT PICTURE OF BIG SUR. Also neither of us have been to the West Coast before (west of Vegas at least).  Right now this seems like our most feasible and realistic option…but our dream options are: Hawaii (I just had a dream about it!), Paris, Venice, or really anywhere in Italy, England/Ireland. There are a lot of other places I’d like to visit one day, but these are the top honeymoon dreams in my head right now.

Any suggestions on where to honeymoon that’s moderately priced? And can it still be called a honeymoon THREE years later?? We have to get moving on this thing before we’re on our honeymoon on our tenth anniversary or something!

  1. Davey and I have been talking about a West Coast road trip too! Big Sur (and all of Cali) looks so gorgeous! And it can definitely still be called a honeymoon!!

California is BEAUTIFUL, so if you’re wanting to stay in the states, I highly recommend it!!!! !I’m terrified of Hawaii because of the big bugs, so I wouldn’t go there:) So my out-of-the-country choice would be Italy!! I’ve been to Rome and it blew my mind. I’d love to explore more Italian cities & eat a lot of pasta 🙂

I’m sure it can be still called honeymoon! 😛 I hope you get to go somewhere nice. 🙂

Huey and I have been talking about a West Coast trip also! Ever since traveling out there for United.. I’ve been dying to go back!

You know I will vouch for California all day long!!! So romantic, such a getaway from real life, and honestly you can do it for very moderate prices. We got our flights and hotel in SF on Orbitz for a “steal” (at least as far as trips go). We splurged a little on our Napa hotel, but because we went during the off-season, we stayed 5 nights for the price of 4! We loved both San Francisco and Napa, and it’s so cool that they’re so close to each other. You can do the touristy big city thing, but still be about an hour away from romantic wine country heaven (or cute little coastal towns, redwood forests, etc.) We LOVED it!

Depends what kind of trip you are looking for! If you want half relax/half sight seeing, definitely Hawaii — SO pretty, yet so much to do. But if you’re looking for more of a “see all the sights” adventure type of trip, then maybe 2-3 cities in Europe! The trains make it incredibly easy to get around there. Feel free to e-mail me, my husband and I travel all the time and I can give you some tips!

  7. Y’all HAVE to get to Hawaii one day. But save up to do it big – it’s worth it! A northern Cali trip is on my bucket list too!!! You guys should TOTALLY do it! St. John’s, USVI, is also on our bucket list. I think you have some good ideas in the bucket! Europe you could knock out with one big trip! Ahhh I’m excited for you!

I recommend England or Ireland roadtrip & also the amazing Italy. We’ve just been planning a roadtrip in Italy for this october 🙂

European Cruise! We took 2 weeks and did it, I would say we did it under $6k flights cruise and trinkets to bring home! I blogged the whole thing on my blog, just search honeymoon! We saw 11 cities, 4 countries, and never had to repack our bags! Barcelona, Spain – Venice, Italy by way of greece and turkey! Fantastic fabulous and would do another in europe again!

  10. Alex Meyer says:

St. John USVI!! Seriously! It was so practical and ridiculously beautiful and relaxing. We did homeaway and rented a condo and just relaxed and drank boom booms all week. It was perfect! We aren’t repeat vacationers, but we still say every week “when can we go back to St. John?”

  11. Caitlin says:

ahh, there are so many options! santorini, greece was the most beautiful place i’ve ever seen (and it was SO cheap). we had a full suite with two bedrooms and it was only $30 a NIGHT! the most expensive part is flying out there- but i swear it’s worth every single penny 🙂

  12. Brea says:

It’s totally still a honeymoon! I would recommend Hawaii the highest but it’s not at all moderately priced. Super expensive coming from the east coast but I swear to you, worth every penny. I’ve been to lots of tropical destinations and nothing has ever compared. California however is an amazing option too and I am big time in love with San Diego!

  13. Jen Jar says:

You know how I feel about California! I think you should totally save up and do it big though since you’ve already waited 3 years to take a honeymoon. Europe would be amazingggggggggg!

  14. Brooke says:

Happy third anniversary!! I am going to Maui, and it looks beautiful – that is my suggestion 🙂

  15. My boyfriend and I just did the CA road trip in February … it’s AMAZING and if you want any pointers, definitely check out my blog posts from it … but I would say “GO BIG OR GO HOME” … GO TO EUROPE! 🙂

  16. My husband and I just got back from California and we road tripped from LA up through Big Sur and ended in Pacific Grove/Monterey. It was BREATHTAKING the entire drive. We stopped at Hearst Castle in San Simeon along the way, which was a nice break in the middle of the drive. I 100% recommend that trip!!! We stayed at Lover’s Point Inn in Pacific Grove…which was only about $100/night. It wasn’t the fanciest place to stay..but was literally RIGHT on the water and the view across the street was breathtaking. And for $100/night…you can’t beat that! Lots to do in Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel. And you could always camp a few nights in Big Sur!! ANNNND….stay at the Deetken’s Big Sur Inn. It’s the most adorable Inn tucked right off the Pacific Coast Highway. Covered in vines/wisteria… definitely like something right out of a movie!! http://www.deetjens.com/ Have fun wherever you end up going!!! 🙂

  17. Sarah Lovell says:

I would definitely second what Amanda said Katie! We just came back and there is so much to do around San Fran. We flew into Oakland (only because our flight to San Fran was canceled) and then explored Santa Cruz for a bit before heading to Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur. All of this is only a couple hours south of San Fran. After that, we went back up to San Fran for a few nights where we also incorporated visiting Muir Woods and Napa. It was amazing!!! It’s cheaper than international, and you will honestly see so much beauty out there. Do it!!!!!! 🙂

  18. Annamarie says:

Ohhh I would go with Europe if you’re wanting to explore and see the sights, but somewhere tropical if you’re just wanting to relax!! I’m dying to go to Northern California too! So gorgeous!!

  19. Depends what you want to do – lay around on a beach eating (!) and suntanning, go to Thailand. Food amazing, friendly people and cheap.

We’ve done Ireland/ UK twice (I love it that much) but LOTS OF WALKING. Mind you, you both are very fit 🙂 Although Ireland is very expensive as is Europe….

    Definitely still a honeymoon!!!
