On Being Present

Personal

During my “lunch hour” these days I watch something recorded to our DVR while I eat. I wish I could say I read books or did something productive during this time other than sit, eat and stare at the tv, but hey, watching tv makes me happy. I finally got around to watching a bunch of stuff I dvr’d around the holidays this past week. One of the things I watched was Barbara Walter’s 10 Most Fascinating People…which was…interesting. I was totally hoping to see a Kimye interview, but there wasn’t one. Which would have totally made me feel like I got gipped…that is, if it wasn’t for the segment on Robin Roberts.

What really stood out to me about her interview was when she said this: “If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.”.

Wow.

I think this really struck me because I’m in a semi-constant state of anxiety. Maybe that’s a little dramatic, but I’m a worrier for sure. If I don’t have something to worry about, I’ll find it. My dad used to say to me “You worry too much!”. My response was always, “If I don’t worry about it, who will??”. What Robin said made me think. I need to live in the present because no one really knows what’s going to happen tomorrow, and there’s nothing I can do to go back in time and change things either.

I think this is something we all know…living in the present is the healthiest and happiest way to live. But sometimes we forget. At least, I know I do. I’m thankful for the reminder though, and I hope maybe this post will remind someone else too:)

Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re all thinking about our futures a lot, I wouldn’t say that isn’t healthy, it’s nice to have goals and look forward to the future, just the worrying part … that eats me too, I’m a natural worrier. haha

Definitely need a reminder! I’m also in a constant state of anxiety it seems! Deep breaths, haha. We need a club to remind each other!
