Ten things you (probably) didn’t know about me

Personal

October 26, 2012

A bunch of my favorite bloggers and photographers have done one of these posts recently, so being the trailblazer that I am, I decided to give it a shot too! What is a Friday without tons of useless (but possibly entertaining) information about me??

1. I used to want to be a country singer. My family lived in Tennessee (about an hour from Nashville) from the time that I was six until the summer when I turned ten. We listened to a LOT of country music back then…I mean, what else do you do when you live so close to the world’s country music capital? Somehow I got it in my head that I would be a great country singer…I even asked for a guitar for Christmas one year! Sadly, I still don’t know how to play guitar and my biggest contribution to country music has been singing along to Taylor Swift songs in my car.

2. My favorite car was my 1986 Dodge Ram. Okay, okay. So now I’m starting to sound like the first ever Asian redneck to walk the planet. I’m not a redneck, (I actually tan very easily) but I loved that truck so much! It first belonged to my sister, then it belonged to me at a time in my life when I was really starting to experience what independence was like. The year I started driving my truck was a big year for me…I got my first “real” job, I moved into my own place, and I started “officially” dating John.

3. I was chubby for two years. I’m only 5’2”, and I’ve always had a small frame so most people I know just assume I’ve been small my entire life. Haha. Not true! When I was 11, I weighed 80-90 pounds. I was borderline Ethiopian child skinny. I think my bowl haircut weighed more than I did (THANKS MOM for the sexy ‘do). The next year when I was 12, I weighed 140 pounds! I weighed between 140-150 until I was about 14, when I dropped down to 115 or so. There are lots of people who look beautiful with lots of curves…I am so not one of them. I looked like a chipmunk with forehead pimples and greasy hair.

4. I’m adopted. I was adopted when I was an infant from Korea, where I was born. I’ve been an American since before I can remember, my mom took me and held me while I was being sworn in. I love my parents, my step parents, my sister, and all of our crazy relatives. I love my husband who I never would have met if I wasn’t adopted. Sometimes I’m sad I don’t know my biological family. I will probably never have the opportunity to meet them, so I am really excited for John and I to have kids one day so I can finally meet some biological relatives.

5. My other potential career paths included: figure skater, marine biologist, journalist, novelist, social worker, politician (haha), teacher, book editor, and film director. The film director one was something I really wanted to do for a long time while I was a teenager. I just knew that there were Oscars in my future! I wrote out mini screenplays and even made up little storyboard cards to go with them.

6. I wrote short stories as a teenager. The last one kind of brought me here….when I was a teenager I was home-schooled (bonus thing you may not have known about me!) and I had lots of free time on my hands. I also wasn’t allowed on the internet unless I was being supervised by my parents so I had LOTS of time on the computer without internet. What else is there to do on an internet free computer besides play solitaire and write short stories??? Most of my stories were melodramatic tales of teenagers falling in love, but I have to say, compared to some of the stuff out now (cough, twilight, cough) my stories weren’t half bad 🙂

7. I don’t really like coffee or drink caffeinated beverages.  Posting this makes me feel like a freak of nature. WHO DOESN’T LIKE COFFEE???  I love how coffee smells and I like the idea of it, but I’m just not into it. Every once in a while I’ll have a pumpkin latte or a salted caramel mocha, but only decaf and I probably won’t drink it all! I have never reacted well to caffeine  I get terrible headaches and sometimes stomachaches too. I started drinking tea this year (which I love) but I try to find decaf or herbal varieties. I also LOVE drinking soda, but I opt for caffeine free or something like Sprite which just doesn’t have caffeine anyway.

 8. I rarely wear jewelry. I’m trying really hard to accessorize my outfits more, but I’m just not really all that fancy. I like simple outfits that speak for themselves. I also have a weird thing about my neck. I HATE when things touch the front of my neck. I feel like I’m choking or being strangled and I need to get free. So if I DO wear a necklace, it’s probably a long necklace or a statement necklace thats well away from my neck!

9. I can’t swim. No really. And neither can John. If we’re ever on a sinking ship together we’re BOTH doomed unless there’s room for everyone in the lifeboats.

10. I had a country accent when I first started talking. Again, I know…world’s first Asian redneck.

Whew! That was a lot of randomness, wasn’t it??? To thank you guys for reading the blog and supporting me I’d like to give away a ten dollar gift card to Starbucks so you can enjoy some caffeinated (or caffeine free) beverages of your own:) To enter, just comment on this post with one thing people may not know about you, and I’ll pick someone Monday morning!

I love this post. 🙂 I’m adopted, too, but I love accessories and coffee. And I can swim. So I’ll just…swim you over a life raft or something.

  2. Brea says:

lol I love that you call yourself an asian redneck. I also don’t like coffee *high five*

Thanks for sharing this post 🙂

  3. Emilia Jane says:

Love this post 🙂 If we lived in the same city I would totally teach you how to swim! I used to teach lessons and be on the swim team.

  4. Meredith says:

Katie, I’ve decided you need to meet my family- I have four cousins who were also adopted from Korea as infants and they all grew up in Buckingham County, Virginia: AKA redneck heaven- where the biggest holidays of the year are opening days on various hunting seasons. Needless to say, you’re not alone in being an Asian redneck… my cousins all try really hard to fight their country accents, but they just can’t do it!

something that a lot of people don’t know about me is that although I love to travel, I’ve never been out of the country, and I’ve never been west of San Antonio, TX.

  5. Jen Jar says:

Katie, we need to really start hanging out more so I can immerse you in some Asian-ness HAHAHA! And this is coming from someone who sometimes drives a Ford F350 dually…yeah who’s a redneck now?!?!?! <3

  6. Linda says:

I’m right with you on the coffee!! I use to work in fast food (blech!) and I loved the smell of the coffee but I always found the taste… well, repulsive. haha.
