The 5D Mark II

Business, Photography

April 4, 2013

Before I really go too far with gushing about how excited I am to own my very own 5D Mark II, I just want to pay a little homage to the camera I built my business with…the Canon 50D! Even though this camera will be on backup status now, it will always have a special place in my heart because it taught me some really important lessons early on into my photography career. When I first started out, I was overwhelmed by all of the different camera bodies out on the market and how each of the photographers I really admired had tens of thousands of dollars of equipment in their bags. I felt discouraged, like there was no way I could ever carve a place for myself in the photography industry without dropping over 10k to start my business. How could my images ever come anywhere close to theirs when I wasn’t shooting full frame? Why would people hire someone who didn’t own all of the best equipment? Was I really a “professional” photographer without all that stuff?

The answer is this: you (and me, too) are MORE than the gear that we shoot with.

You are more than the lenses and camera bodies you choose to use. Yeah, shooting with better gear definitely isn’t going to hurt you, but in the long run what’s matters the most is what’s inside of you…how you work whatever camera you have, whether it be your iPhone, a holga, or a 5d Mark III, or even the top of the line camera body at the time. Your camera gear doesn’t choose the best light to shoot in….you do. Your camera body doesn’t even really know the right settings for a situation unless you tell it! One of the most inspiring (and humbling!) moments from Elizabeth Messina’s class at WPPI was when she showed us pictures she shot on HER IPHONE. Those pictures were so pretty I joked (I’m half serious) that they are prettier than my actual professional photography work! It reminded me how true it is that the photographer is more important than the gear.

My 50D taught me that whatever you shoot with, you should be using it to the best of your ability. People shouldn’t look at your images and say “Oh you shot this with a rebel or a 50d.”. They should look at your image and say “Wow! That’s an awesome image!”. This lesson was so important for me to learn because for so long, I felt that people were looking down on me for my choice of camera. I became determined to prove people wrong, but in the end I realized that the only person who was looking down on me, was me. Okay, maybe there are/were some people judging me, but haters gonna hate, know what I’m saying? The important thing for me to learn was that you can’t let your gear define you. You can’t let a camera that isn’t the top of the line, best of the best body be an excuse to not produce amazing images. You can’t let owning the best camera on the market make you complacent. Photography is about the skill and vision of the photographer. That’s why it’s not called cameraography. (haha)

All of that being said, I’m so excited to introduce you guys to my new child…the 5D Mark II!

I’m soooo excited to finally own a Mark II, because when I first started my photography journey, the photographers I really looked up to shot with Mark IIs, so that was basically my dream, to own one and feel like a legitimate photographer! I know there’s a newer version of this camera out right now, BUT I really believe in the 5D Mark II. I also have a very specific plan for my business finances and it worked out better for me to purchase a Mark II this year instead of a Mark III! I’m also not 100 percent convinced I like how digital the Mark III images look, so who knows what I’ll end up purchasing in 2014!

The pros of my new camera are: better image quality at high ISOs (meaning better for those dark churches and receptions), it’s full frame, so I won’t have to back up into the street as much when I’m shooting (there have been a couple times when I almost got run over by cars…), full frame also means the image quality will be better, and it takes video! I’m really excited to play with the video part because I LOVE making videos. Maybe I can make an all cat Vimeo page…haha!!!!

I just wanted to close out this post by sharing a virtual toast with all of you guys reading this who have ever felt like you weren’t good enough because of the gear that you own…that’s so not true, so stop telling yourself that!

YAY! I’m so excited for you. You have done amazing things with your 50D and now you can be just as amazing without having to fear for your life while you’re shooting in the middle of the street. Win-win!

I am fully expecting you to send me a link to the Lucy da Cat Vimeo page. Just FYI.

I NEVER EVER would’ve known you didnt already have top of the line gear! And I think that says so much about you, your photography skills, and your determination to make each moment count! Im super excited for you and always look forward to the next session you shoot! xoxo

yay yay yay!!! I’m sooo glad this worked out and I’m beyond excited for you!!! I shot on the original 5D until it died on me and I was forced to upgrade and I had a few photogs contact me to 2nd shoot and then backed out when they heard what camera I was shooting with. It felt horrible. I am amazed and inspired by how you built your business with your 50D and I can’t WAIT to see what you do with the Mk 2!! I hope you love it!

  4. Thanks Katie! It’s SO encouraging to know that I don’t have to have the latest gear to really hone in my photography skills and build my business. I had NO IDEA you shot with a 50D until now. I just got my first semi-professional camera (60D) and I’m really excited to continue building my business with it. I am so encouraged and thankful that you wrote a post not about how completely awesome your new camera is, but also how awesome your old one was. So important to know for people like me ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. SO excited for you! I know how long you’ve been waiting for this!

  7. Laura says:

Congrats on your new gear! I wouldn’t have known you already didn’t shoot with the best! Keep up the great work!

  8. YES to everything you said in this post!!! I’m going to date myself here… but I started my business on the 20D!!! I shot my first 2 years of weddings on that thing + a 50mm 1.4. Yup. And you are right – it is about the photographer – not the gear!! xoxo!

  9. Dani says:

    Woot woot!! Love that camera!!!

  10. Emily says:

Awesomesauce. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  11. CONGRATS!! The day I got my Mark II was probably the best day of my life. The ISO capabilities has made my life so much less stressful! ๐Ÿ™‚ But you’re right! The photographer is who is making the photo happen. I’ve handed my camera off to people before for them to take photos and well, they aren’t that great. As bad as this is to say, I’m glad to know I actually understand a little bit about lighting, exposing, etc. ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy!!!

  12. Jen Harvey says:

Katie, this is great! I specifically like what you said about the camera you were shooting with. Its not about the camera, its about the artist and the talent they have. Although you did beautiful work before, i cant wait to see the work that you keep producing with you new love.

  13. Sarah says:

I can relate!!! I find it so frustrating that I first built my business on a Canon 20d and then upgraded to the 7d but I’m dying for a full frame, the extra space! Ha. But the cost hinders because I have to eat and live as well! I see people buying their loved ones mkiii’s or hobbyists getting them and I pout a little! But the important thing I then tell myself is that I can bang out a great photo with my 7d and I know what I’m doing and sometimes I get asked for help by these people so Im thankful I have the knowledge! ๐Ÿ˜€ Somedayyyy! Congrats on the new addition, it’s a great feeling to have something you deserve so much!

  14. Ooo.. I love this. Great homage to your old camera. Congrats on the upgrade!

  15. Sarah Adams says:

  16. Congrats on the new camera ๐Ÿ™‚ I totally agree with all you wrote! I’m buying a FF in a few weeks and i can’t wait ๐Ÿ™‚

I know I’m a day late and a dollar short…but thank you so much for this post! I found your blog a while ago and started browsing through your “business” labeled posts today. I’ve decided to really start crafting my photography into a business…and by “start” I mean practice, practice, practice with friends/family before I officially turn it into a business. I am at the very beginning and I shoot with a Canon Rebel t4i. I was feeling discouraged that I didn’t have the almighty Mark II or Mark III in my bag. I needed this blog post sooooo much! I’m hopefully purchasing my first non kit lens soon (50mm 1.4) and I want to buy a few more lenses before actually upgrading my camera body. After reading this I know that I’m on the right track. Again, I can’t thank you enough for this!
