Apartment Living

Personal

We live in an apartment, but I’ve never felt like that meant I couldn’t (or shouldn’t) decorate. I think any space you live in for an extended amount of time with people that you love is your home. And there is really something special about taking your home and making it your own. Being self employed I spend a lot of my time here at home, so it’s become even more important to me to make it somewhere I really ENJOY spending time. It’s still a work in progress and I’m still trying to figure out how to write off Target’s Nate Berkus collection as business expenses, but little by little this place is becoming our home!

Our apartment actually flooded about a week after we moved in (see pictures here if you’re curious/missed it) and we had to get rid of some furniture and move to a third floor apartment. Hence the cheapo fiberboard bookcases you are about to see. Before we moved to the third floor I was thinking about hosting client meetings in our apartment. Now I’m not so sure if we will. We live in a gated community and it can be a little tricky getting through the gate. What do you guys think? Would you want to come over for a beer or some tea and hang out with me and Lucy the cat?

There’s lots more things I want to do to our place before the whole thing is really blog worthy (maybe I’ll blog some of the projects?) but here are a few of my favorite little things in our place (besides the two best things, Lucy and John).

A lot of the items in our home are leftover wedding decor! The antique Maryland license plate was displayed at our reception because John is from Maryland and most of the books are vintage books I thrifted for our centerpieces. The wood numbers on the top shelf of the bookcase are actually leftover table numbers! I kept the ones that were our wedding date (5/21). Amanda gave me the matryoshka doll. What she didn’t know is that I’m OBSESSED WITH THEM. I don’t know why….I just love them!

These two things are on a different bookshelf. I didn’t photograph the whole thing because it’s another sad little fiberboard bookshelf. I’m looking for something more custom/vintage looking to replace it!  I think we’re getting old enough to start replacing our “just starting out” furniture 🙂

This last thing is totally random, but I love it! It’s an anthro egg crate that I use to store my earrings in! I’m not a huge jewelry wearer to begin with, but having to dig through a pile of earrings in a jewelry box drawer is just not going to happen for me. I’m just not that motivated to accessorize. But having them all out in the open in the little egg crate makes it easy for me to see them and want to wear them!

  5. I can relate to this post! I couldn’t agree more about making your apartment your home! While I personally agree I was on the third floor (I hear the 3rd floor neighbors walking above me and hate it!!) we’re in the middle, good old 2nd floor! We have some hand me down furniture that wasn’t starter furniture but the couch and loveseat/ottoman set is definitely going to be replaced! Plus I should probably figure out whether we’re going brown wood or black, haha we have a little mixture.
What if you tacked up the license plate on the first in the back so you can use your chalk board frame more visibly!? 😀

Ok that anthro egg crate is GENIUS! However, I can just see my cats scooping out all the jewelry and making a mess :/ Does Lucy not mess with it at all?
