Summer Reading: How to Win Friends and Influence People

I’ll admit it.

I was skeptical about this book. I mean, it was published in 1937!! That’s before my grandma was born! I wasn’t sure that it would offer anything relevant, or that it could offer any advice that wouldn’t seem outdated in the technology fueled age we live in now, but I gave it a try anyway, because it was on sale in the kindle store. And gosh, I’m so glad I did!

Even though the book was written over 75 years ago, it’s still very easy to read and has lots of little anecdotes that made it interesting and enjoyable. The principles the book covers are all very simple things, but they’re written in a way that makes you think “Wow, why didn’t I think of that??”. If you have a kindle or the iPad kindle app, you know you can highlight passages in the books you read and then go back and look at them later…well I highlighted something on every other page. At least. There were so many good little tidbits of knowledge, many of them are common things that we all know (but don’t always practice), but there were many new ideas for me to consider as well!

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone, but I think it’s a really helpful read for small business owners, and photographers in particular. I’m not the most outgoing or social person until I really get to know people, so this book has definitely given me a lot of things to think about and improve upon. And not just with clients or potential clients, but with wedding guests, bridal party, vendors, and all types of others that we have to interact with on a wedding day while also focusing on the light, shooting, the timeline, and everything else there is to think about.

Because I enjoyed this book so much, I decided I want to give a copy away! I’ll gift one person either a paperback or the kindle version. All you have to do to enter to win your own copy is leave a comment with your favorite summer book. I’ll pick the winner and notify them by email on Monday!

I read this book when I was in high school and even then I really loved it. I think I need to re-read it. It’s great and always will be. I have a paperback copy that’s older than I am (my dad’s old book) and a kindle version!

I love Summer Sisters by Judy Blume for summer reading.

My favorite summer read is Shopaholic! It is light and funny — perfect for the beach. 🙂

  4. Maria says:

Can we go with summer magazine? I don’t reread books much so…it’d have to be Better Homes and Gardens so I can pretend to have a pretty arts and crafts house or beach house, either/or works 🙂

I’m reading a lot of david sedaris this summer, but Rum Diaries is of course the best summer book!

That sounds like such a helpful and great book! I’d love to read it for sure. I don’t know if I have a favourite summer book in particular, but I know I loved The Hunger Games! I might just need to re-read the books again. I’m also reading The Help right now and oh my goodness that book is amazing! I am loving it so far! Hope you have a lovely weekend filled with sunshine!

I agree with Mia I love Hunger Games and that might be a new summer reread fav for me but I have to go with the Harry Potter series for sure. I spent a few summers opening those books back up for an easy read on car trips or flights and they never ever grow old! The year the seventh book came out I was super stoked to read the “British” version in Germany while visiting family 3 months before it was released in America. I felt pretty VIP…
